Archbishop Viganò Excommunicated

Viganò is one of the most prominent critics of the current Pope, and also a supporter of Donald Trump

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, a staunch critic of the Pope and of globalism, has been excommunicated by the Pope for schism.

The former papal ambassador to the United States was summoned to appear before the Vatican on Thursday, but declined to attend. The ruling means that Viganò  cannot receive the sacraments of the Catholic Church, including communion.

“His public statements manifesting his refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, his rejection of communion with the members of the Church subject to him, and of the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Council are well known,” the Vatican said in a statement issued after the ruling of the Dicastry for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The decision can now only be overruled by the Pope himself, whom Viganò has criticized on a number of occasions and even called upon to resign.

In 2018 he released a dossier accusing the current Pope of knowing about allegations of abuse of trainee priests by the former cardinal of Washington DC, Theodore McCarrick, and doing nothing to prevent it. The Pope was cleared of these charges after an internal Vatican inquiry.

The archbishop has also accused the Pope of heresy and schism and said that his election to the papal seat should be considered “null and void.”

Viganò has been particularly critical of the Pope’s support of what he calls “climate fraud,” for his support for COVID-19 vaccination and social restrictions during the pandemic, and for attempting to promote an “inclusive, immigrationist, eco-sustainable, and gay-friendly” Church.

He has also been vocal in his support of Donald Trump against his globalist opponents. In October of 2020, he wrote an open letter to Trump, saying that “The fate of the whole world is being threatened by a global conspiracy against God and humanity.” The mainstream media seized upon this letter to denounce Viganò  as a “Q-anon conspiracy theorist.”

In a statement issued on 28 June, after it became clear that he would be excommunicated, Viganò provided a powerful refutation of his critics and stated that he refused to recognise the authority of those who sit in judgment of him.

He also urged Catholics to remain calm in the face of current trials and tribulations.

“To the Catholic faithful, who today are scandalized and disoriented by the winds of novelty and the false doctrines that are promoted and imposed by a Hierarchy rebellious against the Divine Master, I ask you to pray and offer your sacrifices and fasts pro libertate et exaltatione Sanctæ Matris Ecclesiæ, so that Holy Mother Church may find Her freedom and triumph with Christ, after this time of passion.”
