There was speculation Trump has made his pick for vice president, after it was revealed that the former president has started following Ben Carson on Truth Social.

Reactions were broadly positive on social media.

“By far the best choice,” Tweeted one user.

“I’m OK with Carson as VP. Burgum has executive experience but I don’t trust him with his ties to Bill Gates,” Tweeted another.

Nevertheless, many were sceptical, with some noting Trump also follows South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, and others saying there are clearly better candidates for the position, especially given Carson’s age. He will be 77 by the end of a second Trump term.

Trump has remained tight-lipped about his choice of running mate. He is due to announce his pick by 15 July, the first day of the Republican National Convention, according to insiders.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that discussions within the Trump campaign have narrowed to three possible candidates: Senators J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

Trump has also been privately discussing other candidates, the Post added.

“Doug Burgum is the choice if you’re worried about governing,” Brad Todd, a Republican strategist, told The Post.

“J.D. Vance is the candidate if you think you’re going to win no matter what and you’re trying to shape the party going forward. Marco Rubio is the candidate you pick if you’re worried about winning the election.”

These sentiments were shared Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who said “J.D. Vance is the future of the Republican Party.”

“There’s a great case to make him the running mate because whoever Donald Trump taps to be his vice president is immediately in contention to be president four years later which makes this decision a lot different than the decision he made in 2016.”

Trump said in June that he had decided on his pick, but that he hadn’t told them yet.
