Fugitive Illegally Entered US Days After Conviction for Brutal Attempted Murder in El Salvador

Violent illegal alien released into country by ICE

Authorities have arrested a fugitive who illegally entered the U.S. days after being convicted in the brutal attempted murder of a woman in El Salvador.

On Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the capture of the 57-year-old illegal alien — nearly a year after the same agency set him loose in the interior.

On June 29, 2023, the man was reportedly convicted in a Salvadoran court of attempted aggravated femicide with a machete and culpable injury and sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Incredibly, just two days later, the convict was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) after he illegally entered the country near Rio Grande City, Texas, ICE explained in a press release.

On July 7, 2023, the Salvadoran was transferred to custody of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Harlingen field office.

On August 16, ICE ERO released him into the U.S. with a future notice to appear before a federal immigration judge.

USBP, ICE, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services were allegedly unaware of the illegal alien’s conviction in El Salvador.

Salvadoran authorities issued a warrant for the man’s arrest and ICE ERO agents tracked him down on June 20, 2024, near his residence in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

He remained in ICE ERO custody as of June 24.

“This Salvadoran national committed a horrific crime in his home country and attempted to hide from justice in Maryland,” acting ERO Baltimore Field Office Director Matthew Elliston said in a statement.

“Our officers are the best in the world at finding people who don’t want to be found. This Salvadoran fugitive posed a significant and grievous threat to the residents of our communities. ERO Baltimore will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from our Maryland neighborhoods.”

Authorities continue to catch dangerous foreign criminals illegally present in the U.S., many of whom have been previously released into the country by law or immigration enforcement agencies.
