‘I’ve been playing pool since I was 17 and I’m fifth in the world but I’m risking throwing everything away over this because I hate unfairness,’ says Portuguese team captain Alexandra Cunha.
A top-ranking professional female pool player sparked controversy after declaring she won’t compete against transgender opponents, citing concerns about physical advantages held by biological males.
Alexandra Cunha, 49, a UK-based Portuguese women’s national pool team captain, turned heads after she pulled out of the International Rules Pool Tour tournament, blaming recent rule changes by the sport’s governing authority, the World Eightball Pool Federation.
“As we live in a free world and I will stand up for what I believe is fair, I will not play against any players that wasn’t born a woman independently of being a first round or a final,” Cunha wrote in a letter last month to the International Rules Pool Tour, informing organizers she’d play if men were banned from the tourney.
Instead, her entry fee was refunded.
Cunha’s opposition to males playing in female categories comes after she recently lost to a transgender player.
“I’ve been playing pool since I was 17 and I’m fifth in the world but I’m risking throwing everything away over this because I hate unfairness,” Cunha told the Daily Mail.
“I recently played a transgender player and I was destroyed when I lost.”
In question are the inherent genetic differences between biological men and women, mainly that men have more upper body strength, enabling them to initially “break” the balls during gameplay with much greater force which can affect the outcome of a match.
“In addition, trans players are said to be able to play games at a faster pace and have an extended reach when taking shots due to their longer arm span,” notes the Daily Mail.
The pool governing body sent shockwaves throughout the female pool community on Oct. 24 when it announced the rule change, saying, “World Eightball Pool Federation and Ultimate Pool Group remain committed to the development of the sport for all participants and gender inclusivity is an important part of this.”
In response, 60 female pool players signed a petition urging the Federation not to implement the change, as reported by the Daily Mail.
“I’m worried now about the future of the game for women. If next year we had eight trans player they would probably be in the top eight,” one player, Lynne Pincher, reportedly stated.
Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies also criticized the Federation, saying it diminishes women’s accomplishments in the sport.
“Pool is a male-dominated sport, like so many, and these women have worked hard to get their own tour,” Davies said.

“These organizations know their game is sex-affected. They know women need their own tournaments to grow female participation & opportunities. They must show courage and decency and stand up for women.”
Can women retain control of their sports in the face of the woke trans takeover, or are they destined to be surpassed by men?
