Illegal migrants, smugglers slamming U.S. by land, air, and sea
More than 1,000 illegal migrants were caught during the first half of December by authorities responsible for patrolling waters and coastline around the southeastern U.S. and island territories.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced 1,086 apprehensions by Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Southeast Region crews between December 1 and 14.

On December 1, CBP AMO agents helped remove 63 illegal migrants — including two pregnant women — from a “dangerously overloaded” vessel near Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.
While processing the passengers, agents discovered five of the men had already been deported from the U.S. after being convicted of felony crimes, including manslaughter, assault, and narcotics trafficking.

During the most significant bust of the period, CBP AMO worked alongside a variety of other agencies to round up more than 300 illegal migrants and smugglers near the Turks and Caicos Islands on December 5.
On the same day, CBP AMO shared details about a vessel carrying 20 illegal migrants that was intercepted near Miami.

On December 11, a “rustic” watercraft displaying an SOS flag was interdicted near Key Largo, Florida.
A total of 47 illegal migrants were pulled from the “overloaded vessel.”
They told authorities they had departed from Cuba some eight days prior.
