Shock Video: Good Samaritan Drags Wounded Cop to Safety During Gun Battle on Houston Freeway

Ex-convict rescues injured officer as carjacker opens fire on busy highway

A heroic bystander put his life in jeopardy to rescue a police officer who was shot during a gun battle with a carjacking suspect on freeway in Texas over the weekend, according to reports.

The harrowing incident unfolded at around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning in Houston.

Officers were pursuing a suspect in a stolen car when he crashed into multiple vehicles on the Southwest Freeway and tried to carjack several drivers, WFAA reports.

The suspect opened fire on Houston police officers, striking one in the leg.

Amid an ensuing shootout, a motorist observed the wounded officer and rushed to his aid, dragging him to safety behind a truck with the help of another cop.

The Good Samaritan was reportedly wearing a camera that captured the daring intervention.

The man, later identified as ex-convict John Phillip Lally, was reportedly on his way to work when he was caught in the crossfire.

Lally can be heard yelling, “I got you! You’re okay, bro!” as he runs toward the wounded officer and begins dragging him away.

“Hold my hand,” he repeats as the injured cop yells in pain.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner later commended Lally for his bravery.

“There’s one citizen out there who has had some trouble with law enforcement in his life,” Finner said. “But today, he and a few other citizens, along with our officers, when that officer went down, they pulled him to safety.”

“I believe that we’re all here for a reason. I also believe that if you see somebody in dire need, it’s our job to help each other out,” Lally said in comments to the media.

The wounded officer, a 29-year-old man with a baby at home, was treated at hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to survive.

The suspect died from injuries sustained during the gun battle but little information about him has been made public.

An investigation is ongoing.
