One dead, multiple injured after teen suspects leave party to “drive around the city to shoot at random people”

A Honduran teenager who is in the U.S. illegally has been charged with murder following a series of shootings in North Carolina last week, according to reports.

The deadly crime spree unfolded between 1:00 and 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Charlotte.

A pair of suspects opened fire upon at least five random victims across the city, killing one.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) was initially notified about a motorist who had been shot by someone in a passing vehicle.

Responding officers encountered a victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Over the next 30 minutes or so, another driver reported that his vehicle had been struck by gunfire and a bicyclist said he had been shot at.

Occupants of an additional vehicle told CMPD someone had opened fire upon them, and then a woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by a bullet inside her residence.

Another bicyclist was found shot just before 1:30 a.m. and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“In the early morning hours of Thursday, July 11, 2024, officers observed a suspicious vehicle in a patrolled area. Officers initiated a traffic stop and located a juvenile suspect believed to be connected to the series of shooting incidents inside of the vehicle.  The juvenile was taken into custody without incident.  Officers also recovered a firearm and the suspect’s vehicle,” CMPD explained in a press release on Thursday.

“The 16-year-old was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) to be interviewed by Homicide detectives.  During the course of the investigation, Carlos Roberto Diaz 18, was identified as a second suspect in this case.”

Diaz was located a short time later and taken into custody.

He now faces a slew of charges, including first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder, felony conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling.

The 16-year-old was also charged with first-degree murder and is expected to face additional charges, according to CMPD.

“I’ve learned Roberto-Diaz and the juvenile who were both arrested and charged in this crime, had just left a party and decided to drive around the city to shoot at random people,” WSOC TV journalist Hunter Sáenz reported on Friday, citing an affidavit.

#NEW: I’ve learned Roberto-Diaz and the juvenile who were both arrested and charged in this crime, had just left a party and decided to drive around the city to shoot at random people.

That’s according to an affidavit I got my hands on.

Later on Friday, Sáenz revealed that Diaz is an illegal alien from Honduras.

“The suspect, who was 14 years old at the time, had an encounter with Border Patrol along the Rio Grande River in Mexico back in 2019,” WSOC TV reports.
