Teen suspect arrested for shooting 49ers rookie during broad-daylight robbery attempt

A first-round NFL draft pick was shot in the chest by a teen suspect during an attempted armed robbery in California just days ahead of the 2024 season opener, according to reports.

The shocking incident unfolded just after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in downtown San Francisco.

Ricky Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, had just finished signing autographs at a local event before heading to Union Square.

Pearsall was confronted on a busy sidewalk by an armed thief, and during an ensuing struggle, a firearm was discharged multiple times.

Responding officers encountered two wounded males at the scene, including the suspect and Pearsall, who had been shot in the chest.

Footage taken by a witness shows Pearsall being led to an ambulance before he was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital.

Pearsall was listed in serious but stable condition, the 49ers announced on Saturday evening.

The bullet that struck Pearsall in the chest exited through his back, but miraculously, none of his organs were struck, according to an update posted to social media by his mother.

The suspect has been identified as a 17-year-old resident of Tracy, California, but additional information remains limited.
