“Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this,” Newsom says.
A campaign ad released by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) depicts a pair of women trying to outrun the police to get an abortion out of state.
“Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this,” Newsom posted on X Sunday with the video.

The campaign ad created by Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy PAC shows the women engaged in a high-speed police chase trying to get an abortion in a neighboring state.
Once pulled over, the officer demands the driver take a pregnancy test.
Talk about delusional.
The over-the-top melodramatic propaganda was roundly mocked on X.
“If we don’t kill this baby right away, people could die!!”

This could be an SNL skit. ?♀️

What’s really sad and scary is that a lot of people will believe this is literally true. Abortion laws target providers, not patients. ??♀️

I think Gavin should turn it into an ad for California: America’s Most Stylish Abortion Destination. No stress, no police. Just a calm, beachy time.

This is unhinged even for you.
— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) April 21, 2024
So I should believe that a cop will pull someone over and ask them to take a pregnancy test? ??
— Brianna Price??? (@briprice661) April 21, 2024
This is total propaganda

Hollywood fearporn production… nowhere in America are state troopers chasing women with pregnancy tests. Do better.

Imagine projecting that a cop will pull, then force someone to take a pregnancy test or that every woman traveling just so happens to be heading to their neighboring state to murd*r their baby. ?️ propaganda from a ?️ governor. Fix our state, you bum.

Alabama has prohibited abortion at all stages of pregnancy with almost no exceptions after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. The only current exemptions on the ban in the state are those for pregnancies that threaten the life of the pregnant mother.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall (R) said last year the state could investigate potential conspiracy or accessory charges for groups that openly fund or promote out-of-state abortions, a far cry from criminalizing women who themselves travel outside the state for an abortion.
