Marine Le Pen’s National Rally was prevented from winning the parliamentary elections by a leftist alliance
French leftists were in jubilant mood last night as a last-minute coalition among leftist parties was able to prevent Marine Le Pen’s National Rally from winning the country’s parliamentary elections.
Video footage posted to social media shows young leftists rejoicing in the streets of Paris and taunting Le Pen supporters as racists.
“You lost. The left is too strong!” said one young Frenchman, with relish.
“We have love, we are celebrating and we have joy, and you, you have hatred. We are too strong.”

Large crowds gathered in the streets bearing Palestinian flags and pro-Gaza placards that linked the “far right” in Paris to Israel and its war in Gaza. Monuments can be seen covered in graffiti, including familiar American slogans like “ACAB.”
A young man in a Che Guevara beret taunts the camera, “You are racist.”
Another young man, presumably from a migrant background,
“We are going to stay. We are staying!”
Standing atop a monument, revellers unfurled a French flag bearing the words, “La France est tissue de migrations”—“France is made of migrations.”
Despite winning the first round of the parliamentary elections with 34% of the vote, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally was prevented from winning the second by a standard political horseplay and tactical voting from the French centre and left, which formed alliances to ensure that the right was deprived of critical votes when it needed them most.
Le Pen’s party finished third, behind Macron’s Together coalition; although National Rally will be the single largest party in the French parliament.
While Macron has prevented the unthinkable from happening, this is not by any means an uncomplicated success for him. For the remaining two years of his presidency he will now have to accommodate more radical elements of the left if he wishes to carry out his domestic agenda.
