Trump said Biden’s new executive order on illegal immigration would make the problem worse
Trump slammed Joe Biden’s new executive order on immigration as “pro-invasion” and “pro-human trafficking, claiming it would only make illegal immigration worse.
Trump was speaking at a Turning Point Action event in Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday when he made the remarks.
Biden’s new executive order, announced to days earlier, on Tuesday, will prevent anyone who crosses the US border from Mexico from seeking asylum if they don’t have a visa and don’t pass through an official point of entry.
“Crooked Joe Biden’s order is pro-invasion, pro-child trafficking, pro-women trafficking, pro-human trafficking, pro-drug dealers — and they bring death and destruction into our Country,” Trump said in Arizona.
“It’s really pro-illegal immigration.”
Trump then reminded the audience that he didn’t even have to go to Congress to secure the border.
Even liberal commentators have suggested that the order will do nothing to improve the situation at the southern border. An academic writing for The Conversation, for example, notes that the order will prove extremely difficult to enforce, since it will require large-scale screening of migrants, and Border Patrol is already overwhelmed by the numbers crossing. Just shy of 250,000 arrests took place along the border in December 2023 alone. Deporting those who are found to be without visas and to have entered somewhere other than an official point of entry may also prove difficult.
The Conversation author also notes that the order is likely to lead to an increase in undocumented children crossing the border alone, because it doesn’t apply to under-18s who cross the border without a parent or guardian. Instead of being deported, they will be detained and have the ability to seek asylum or other protections.
