Black congresswoman claims white security officer prevented her from entering ‘Capitol members only’ elevator.
Social media users are accusing Democrat congresswoman Barbara Lee (Calif.) of fabricating a tale in which she claimed she was the victim of racism at the US Capitol, saying it sounds suspiciously similar to the Jussie Smollett hate hoax.
Lee was speaking to CNN Thursday when she told the tale as an example of the “institutional racism” she claims is embedded in the US’ DNA.

“I was walking from the House building on Capitol Hill to the Capitol and a man, a white guy, stopped me and told me I could not get into the members’ elevator,” Lee told Kaitlan Collins.
“And, you know, we have pins, and I was going to vote. And he blocked me from getting into the elevator and told me that I was not a member of Congress and it was for members only.”
Rep. Lee continued: “I said, ‘Sir, I’m a member of Congress and I showed him my pin, and he said, ‘Whose pin did you steal?’”
“Now this is an example of what personal racism is,” Lee alleged, “and how people of color have to deal with this each and every day.”
Rep. Lee did not entertain the possibility that the security guard may have been confused, or simply made an error.
Lee’s fantastical anecdote was scrutinized online, with many comparing the Dem rep’s story to the tall tale told by former Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who was convicted of lying to police about a fake hate attack he blamed on Trump supporters.
